Excess Energy Concession

Who may be eligible
  • A gas account holder whose winter gas costs are above $1,734 and holds one of the eligible cards
  • An electricity account holder whose annual electricity costs are above $3000 and holds one of the eligible cards

If you receive the Life support concession or the Medical cooling concession you will be automatically eligible to receive the Excess gas concession after submitting a completed application form.

Rebate value
  • 17.5 per cent of your winter gas usage and service costs
  • 17.5 per cent of electricity usage and service costs 

This concession is calculated after retailer discounts and solar credits have been deducted.

How to apply Both the Annual Electricity Concession and Winter Gas Concession have a yearly rebate cap. Once you have reached the rebate limit for either of these concessions, we will check to see if you need to apply for the Excess Energy Concession and send you an application form.

This is simply an extension to your existing Winter Gas Concession or Annual Electricity Concession.

Medical Cooling Concession

Who may be eligible Valid concession card holders with a medical condition that makes it difficult to self-regulate their body temperature when exposed to extreme heat or cold.
Rebate value 17.5% of electricity charges from 1 November to 30 April - the hottest 6 months of the year.

Non-Mains Energy Concession

Who may be eligible

Valid concession cardholders who:

  • Rely on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), firewood (special conditions apply) or heating oil for domestic heating, cooking or hot water, or
  • Access non-mains electricity via an embedded network, or
  • Rely on a generator
Rebate amount

The amount of this rebate depends on the annual cost of each non-mains energy source.

Energy type Non-mains energy.
All non-mains energy costs are covered from 1 January to 31 December each year.

Life Support Concession

Who may be eligible

Valid concession card holders using an electrically-operated life support machine.

Rebate value

The Life Support Concession can give you a rebate on your electricity bills, equal to the cost of 1,880 kWh of electricity per year. The rebate is calculated using the general domestic tariff of your retailer.

This rebate is paid quarterly.

Utility Relief Grant Scheme (URGS)

Who may be eligible

The Utility Relief Grant Scheme (URGS) helps low-income households who can’t pay their utility account.

You’ll be considered eligible if you’re:

  • A single income household earning $2,000 or less a fortnight
  • A dual income household earning $3,038 or less a fortnight

And have also experienced one or more of the following:

  • A recent drop in income or job loss
  • You, or someone in your household has experienced family violence
  • Unexpected high costs for essential items
  • Your rent or mortgage costs are more than 30% of your total household income.
Rebate value

Up to $650 toward your electricity account and up to $650 toward your natural gas account, once in a 2 year period, if you have both energy types. If you have only electricity you can get the full $1,300 toward this.

How to apply

Your URGS application must be submitted with a personalised number. Call us on 1300 658 519. Our team can help answer any questions about the Utility Relief Grant Scheme (URGS) and assist you with filling out your application. 

We'll supply you with an application form and your own form number, either by:

  • Sending you a direct link (via sms or email) to fill out the form online or;
  • Organising an application to be sent by post. Please note this is not preferred by most customers as it takes some time for the form to arrive. 

Prior to sending the form to you, we'll fill out what information we have, You'll then need to complete the rest of the form with your own information. Lodge the application with copies of the required documentation via:

Important info to help you fill out your URGS application

1. Your details

Make sure you provide your name, address and contact phone number. You’ll also need to indicate what utility services you’re applying for help with.

2. The due date

You must return your completed form by the due date. You'll find this listed on your application form. Remember, the quicker you get your form in, the quicker you could receive financial assistance. 

3. Household information

You'll need to include some of your household information. Listing any concession details (if applicable) and your household income.

4. Reason for your application

This is a mandatory section. You need to meet at least one of the four criteria listed in the application form (or see above in "Who may be eligible"). So, please make sure you complete the options that apply to you and include as much information as you can.

5. Documentation

  • If applying due to decreased income or unexpected expenses you may need to include your last 3 payslips or a bank statement.
  • If applying due to a family violence situation, a signed statutory declaration or a referral from a community organisation is requested. Should this not be possible, you'll find more options in your application form.

6. Sign and date
