Do I need to be on site for my reconnection?
Meter readings and reconnections are performed by the network distributor responsible for your area. Whether you need to be home or not during the reconnection depends on several factors, including your supply type, which network supplies your site, which state your site is in, and whether your meter and main switch(es) are accessible.
Electricity
For electricity reconnections in New South Wales (Ausgrid network only) someone over the age of 18 must be on site. In Queensland, someone over the age of 18 must be on site if a site inspection is required.
If your meter and/or main switch(es) are not accessible without your assistance, you will need to be on site for the reconnection to provide access. Please note that some sites have more than one main switch, installed in separate locations, all of which will need to be turned off for the reconnection to proceed.
Common access issues include:
- your meter and/or main switch(es) are inside the home
- your meter and/or main switch(es) are locked inside a meter cupboard, meter room, or similar with a lock that is not network-approved, and the key has not been provided to the network*
- your meter and/or main switch(es) are locked behind a gate, fence, or similar with a lock that is not network-approved, and the key has not been provided to the network*
If your meter and main switch(es) are accessible without your assistance, all your main switches are turned off, and your site is not in the areas stated above, there should be no need for you to be on site during the reconnection. However, the list of access issues above is not an exhaustive list, and a wasted visit fee may apply if the reconnection cannot be completed (on top of an additional reconnection fee), so please use your best judgement when determining whether you would need to be on site. If you foresee any difficulties, we recommend someone over the age of 18 be on site during the reconnection.
Gas
If your gas meter or gas meters are not accessible without your assistance, you will need to be on site for the reconnection to provide access. Please note that some sites have more than one gas meter, that more than one meter may need to be reconnected, and that the meters may be installed in separate locations on the property - in this case, the meter technician will need access to all affected meters.
Common access issues include:
- one or more meters are inside the home
- one or more meters are locked inside a meter cupboard, meter room, or similar with a lock that is not network-approved, and the key has not been provided to the network*
- one or more meters are locked behind a gate, fence, or similar with a lock that is not network-approved, and the key has not been provided to the network*
If all of your gas meters are accessible without your assistance, there should be no need for you to be on site during the reconnection.
*Network-approved locks can be unlocked by the network's technicians. If you're unsure if your meter cupboard, meter room, gate, etc is locked with a network-approved lock, please confirm with your building manager or with the network directly. Some networks have a process in place to manage sites with non network-approved locks, such as accepting a copy of the key - if your meter and/or main switch(es) are behind a non network-approved lock, please reach out to the network directly to discuss your options.
